Rare antique American handled crown molding plane; used
Maker: J. Bradford, Portland, ME; circa 1837-1884
A rare antique American crown molding plane by William Ward. This is a large plane with a pattern width of 2 3/4”. Overall dimensions are 16” long and 3 ¾ wide. Very good condition, all parts including irons are original. Plane is made of beechwood with a boxwood guide strip on right side of iron and a tote that is mortised into top of the body behind the iron. Minor bruising on top of wedge and the boxwood wear strip has 2 stable cracks that do not affect operation or performance of the plane. Plane is fully functional (iron requires sharpening/honing). Makers mark imprint is visible on nose of the plane. Pollak “American Wooden Planes”, 4th edition rarity rating: 2 stars (rare).
